Girl from Yamhill

I read Girl from Yamhill for the first time recently. I found aspects of Cleary's relationship with her mother in the YA The Luckiest Girl, where Shelley, the main character goes off to California for a year to change her life and escape her mother's influence. Toward the end, Shelley portrays compassion for her mother that shows a maturity far beyond her years: she realizes her mother won't change ("Her mother would still tell her she should wear the blue dress instead of the green..."), and all she can do is understand her mother's feelings and go on the best she can. (But that's so much easier to do in fiction!)
