Skellig

I have read your list for a long time but am compelled to share an experience with you related to this discussion. Last week, I attended a book discussion while at the University of Southern Maine's "In Celebration of Children's Literature." I was not the one who brought Skellig to discuss, but had just finished reading it. When I shared my opinions, I also shared that I had begun to read Getting Near to Baby as a related follow-up book. The person discussing Skellig pulled the same book out of her bag and said that it had drawn her too as she completed Almond's fine tale. Neither of us put into words the reason quite as eloquently as the young man that Walter Mayes quoted:
'<< "Everyone grieves differently. Skellig existed so that Michael would be able to celebrate the baby if she lived, and be able to help his family cope if she died." Perhaps if Skellig could step onto the roof or into Aunt Patty's house, Little Sister would have regained her speech sooner.
