Thanks, Julie, for providing the Ana Maria Machado interview. Given the fact that so few of her books are available for us to read here in the United States, it has been especially valuable for us to have these insights into the work of the newest Hans Christian Andersen Award for writing. We'll be posting the complete interview on the CCBC web page soon so that everyone will have access to it in the months to come.
Ana Maria made some interesting points about international children's literature in general and the lack of translated books for children in the U.S. This is an issue we've discussed in the past on CCBC-Net when we've discussed the Batchelder Award for translated books, for which there are only a handful of eligible contenders each year.
Most of the few books that do get translated for U.S. children come from northern Europe and, occasionally, Israel and Japan. I think we could count on the fingers of one hand the translated books that have been published for children in the U.S. in the last 20 years that originated in Latin America.
What are your responses to Ana Maria Machado's comments concerning the accessibility of her work to U.S. children? Do you find that American children have difficulty understanding books from other countries?
We'll be winding down our discussion soon but do feel free to respond to this question or anything Ana Maria said in the next few days as we move into our announcement time. We'll officially begin the July discussion on Monday July 3.
