Skellig

Sharon Lawrence says:

My housemate has a young recorder player, who's also a fantasy buff. His dad has been reading to him since the boy could barely sit up by himself. When he was not quite 8 years old, they read SKELLIG, and as soon as they were finished, the boy turned it over to me. "I need to ask you a question," he said, "but I can't until after you read it." He could hardly wait to do that. The question? "Do you know who Skellig is?" "Yes," I answered. "Do you?" He did, his identification nearly identical to mine. Aha! I thought. Dad's influenced him, I bet. But Dad said Son had come up with that I.D. all by himself.

This was one of his favorite books (next to HOLES) of the year. We still talk about it, now that he's 8. He's currently ensconced in HARRY POTTER IV, which, once he and his father are through reading it, they'll hand over to me. A good read, I suspect, but not anything like SKELLIG.
