Skellig is the kind of book that can serve as a bridge for sophisticated younger readers into the genre of "serious fiction." I would have liked more stories like this when I was younger (I think). but I also agree that children seek neat endings sometimes: my 11 year old wasn't very comfortable with the vague ending of The Seeker, or the less than neat ending in Wringer. She hasn't read Skellig although I have, and liked it very much. That said, Kit's Wilderness is a better book, a better story, a better read, and can satisfy a broader set of appetites than Skellig did. I don't know if my daughter will like Skellig, but I am pretty sure she'll like Kit's Wilderness. One thing you can say about Almond, he doesn't talk down or patronize his audience!
