I appreciate Christin Hill's comment about Nina Bonita which I think has been a controversial book for some precisely because of how it deals with color differences. Perhaps much of that controversy has to do with how race/ethnicity is conceived comparatively between Brazil and the U.S. I always forget the exact number, but in a Brazilian census about 10 years ago, respondents were asked to self?fine themselves by color--in total there were something like 125 different responses listed
(not unusual throughout Latin America and the Caribbean).
