Julie, thanks for the insightful introduction to Ana Maria Machado and her books.
You asked for impressions of her or her work. I was pleased to have an opportunity to meet her when she was in Wisconsin for the Madison Children's Museum a few years ago, and one of the things I remember so clearly about her was her quick wit and playful sense of humor. I'm wondering if that comes out a lot in her books for children: are her books funny? Is she considered a humorist?
The other thing that stood out to me about her was her activism within the Brazilian children's literature community and her efforts to get good books to all children. I learned so much about the Brazilian children's book publishing industry from her, just from an hour's conversation.
Since this is an area you know well, can you give us a bit of a context for Ana Maria Machado's work? As I recall, Brazil has one of the strongest children's book industries in Latin America. Am I remembering that correctly?
