Summarized from Madison Art Center information: The story quilts have been selected from two series,The French Collection and the American Collection. In each, Ringgold blends historical and autobiographical narratives, uniting traditional storytelling with contemporary art theory. The quilts in this exhibition chronicle the lives of two fictional characters: Willia Marie Simone, an African American artist and model who lived in Paris during the 1920s, and her daughter Marlena Truth Simone, an artist living in America. By positioning ...
[them] at the center of artistic production during the peak years of the modern era, both series critique the canonical approach of art history and celebrate the culture and values of those marginalized by Eurocentric views.
