Board Books

In the past few years, we've been happy to see original board books make a comeback in U.S. trade publishing. Any of us who have ever read to babies and squirmy toddlers know how hard it is to hold their attention, and also realize what a challenge it must be for writers to say something meaningful to this audience, in just a few words per page.

Last year the Zolotow Award Committee looked very closely at the writing in the board books of 1999, and tried them out with the very young. The committee selected
"You Are My Perfect Baby" by Joyce Carol Thomas (Harper Growing Tree) for their list of Highly Commended books. Thomas's lyrical text expresses the unconditional love a mother feels for her infant by enumerating all the perfect little body part ? fingers, toes, chin, nose, etc.

What other board books or books especially written for babies and toddlers have you found to be particularly good?
