I think the purpose of board books is to help instill that initial love of books in our children. As long as the child loves the experience of being read to, the closeness of sitting with someone they love and turning the pages, board books are doing their job.
I remember when my first baby was born and someone gave us some board books that were comprised of photographs of babies (and not particularly good photographs) doing things - playing, eating, sleeping, etc., with a simple phrase under each photo. My husband and I thought these books were very unappealing at first, but they turned out to be our daughter's favorite books. And, later, our son's as well. And both our children have grown up to be AVID readers. I still read to them every night and my oldest is thirteen. I hope she will indulge me in this way, until she goes off to college!
