When our child was born, the teacher in me hoped she would "devour" books. Little did I realize she would actually chew, drool and try to eat her library. Hooray for board books!
Three years later, we have come to love many, many books. However, two of our favorites are JAMBERRY by Bruce Degen and JESSE BEAR, WHAT WILL YOU WEAR by Nancy White Carlstrom, illustrated by Bruce Degen. The rythmic text in both of these books makes for a soothing, but exciting read aloud. But, I feel it is the illustrations that make these books exceptional.
The detailed and amusing pictures lend themselves perfectly to discussion. When I first began reading JAMBERRY, we talked about obvious things. "That's a bear. This elephant is ice skating." Time passed and we looked at the pictures in a different way, focusing on new things. Our daughter would say, "I think the elephant's feelings are hurt because that bunny is laughing. I wouldn't laugh." The level of story comprehension has made tremendous leaps from literal to evaluative. The illustrations and text see a child from infancy to the preschool years. They are a real blessing to parents who read them over and over as they have many avenues of interpretation.
Another favorite series of ours is the sheep series by author Nancy Shaw and illustrator Margot Apple. Titles that pop to mind are SHEEP OUT TO EAT, SHEEP IN A SHOP, SHEEP ON A SHIP. They are hilarious and action packed. A fun reading romp.
