"CrashBoomLove" (published in a paperback edition by the University of New Mexico Press) Mr. Herrera will be presented with this award on Friday, June 16, at a program and reception to be held between 4:00 - 6:00pm in the Mary Pickford Theater, James Madison Building of the Library of Congress (101 Independence Avenue, S.E.)

Kathleen Horning chaired the Americas Award Committee and will be part of the program and award presentation at which two Honor Books will be cited, as well:

Award Coordinator Julie K. Kline writes, "I would encourage CCBC-net community members ... to contact me directly for details if they would like to attend the program. We would love to have you come. " If you have questions about attending the presentation, Julie can be reached at the Outreach and Academic Program Coordinator, Center for Latin America, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (414) 229Y86 phone; (414) 229(79 fax; cla at uwm.edu; www.uwm.edu/Dept/CLA

The Am?ricas Award is given in recognition of U.S. works of fiction, poetry, folklore, or selected non-fiction (from picture books to works for young adults) published in the previous year in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States. By combining both and linking the Americas, the award reaches beyond geographic borders, as well as multicultural-international boundaries, focusing instead upon cultural heritages within the hemisphere. The award is sponsored by the national Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP). The award winners and commended titles are selected for their 1) distinctive literary quality; 2) cultural contextualization; 3) exceptional integration of text, illustration and design; and 4) potential for classroom use. The complete, annotated Am?ricas Commended List (as well as past years' lists) is available at: http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/CLA/outreach_americas.html
