board books

I still think the most perfect board books ever are Tana Hoban's series that includes "Red Blue Yellow Shoe," "1, 2, 3," and "What is It?" (and I think one more that I can't remember). These are as simple as can be, with color photos of one baby?miliar object per page. Babies recognize a lot of the objects (teddy bears, cat, shoe, etc.) and the bright, pleasing colors are just so appealing somehow. These have been my standard gift for newborns or first birthdays. Also excellent "oldies" are Helen Oxenbury's oversized board books, "Clap Hands," "Say Goodnight," "Tickle, Tickle," and especially
"All Fall Down." When these first came out I thought seven or eight dollars was a lot to pay for an eight page book, but they're worth it. Nobody draws toddlers better than H.O., and the rhythm of the words makes them perfect for getting the youngest kids to participate as you read. Both of these series are from the eighties, though... It's sort of disappointing that we aren't seeing more board books these days that really capture a baby's world the way Hoban and Oxenbury do.
