Here are some suggestions and reminders, many of which have been sent to us by participants in the CCBC-Net community and some of which are sent to us every month by Chris Dowling:
1) Change the subject line to fit your message. If you're shifting to another aspect of the subject, try not to use the same subject line. You can still hit the Reply button.
2) If you hit the Reply button, please delete most or all of the previous message. Most people don't want to receive a lengthy message, most of which repeats what was sent by someone else. To refer to what someone else wrote, just quote that portion of a previous message or delete everything but that portion of the previous message. Another benefit of remembering this suggestion is that the CCBC-Net Archives will not be as full of repetition if previous messages can be deleted from your messages in reply to someone else.
3) On the first of each month Chris Dowling sends a monthly help reminder to everyone. Please print this out and keep it near your computer(s).
4) If you need to be away from your computer for a week or so and don't want to come back to a huge number of messages, you can set "no mail" according to Chris's directions.
5) If you plan to sign off during an extended vacation or break or for any other reason, please note Chris's directions for doing this. Do NOT write to the entire CCBC-Net community in order to sign off.
6) People who don't like lots of messages really do appreciate the
"digest" format for CCBC-Net. You will receive one message a day if there is any message at all. All messages will be listed, and you can scroll through them.
7) No announcements during the month. Announcements related to Children's or Young Adult Literature are welcome at the end and beginning of each month.
8) Purely commercial announcements are not welcome at any time.
9) It's possible to maintain a civil discussion involving individuals with widely varying points of view and differing opinions. Insults, vulgarities, racist & sexist remarks are not welcome - period. During April Chris Dowling sent everyone a message about established CCBC-Net protocols and courtesies.
10) One of the unique features of CCBC-Net discussions is that they focus on a specific topic. There are other internet discussions where freewheeling changes of topics are the norm. The announced CCBC-Net topic may take many shapes but we attempt to stay within the scope of what the community expects.
Whew... Now, enjoy the next discussion!
