In 1979, UW-Madison alum Ellen Raskin donated the complete manuscript of her Newbery-winning book "The Westing Game" to the CCBC because she wanted UW-Madison students and others using the CCBC to be able to see where books come from. These materials include several drafts; notes between Ellen and her editor, Ann Durrell at E.P. Dutton; her research notes; and specifics related to jacket art and book design. Because Ellen literally kept every scrap of paper related to the book and because she was writing in a time before word processors were used, one can get a good sense of how she shaped the book, from start to finish.

In keeping with Ellen Raskin's original desire that we make the manuscript widely available to anyone interested in learning about how books are written and published, we are pleased to announce that a portion of these original materials are now available on the CCBC's web site. This includes an audiotape of Ellen herself explaining what's there, recorded at the time she donated the manuscript to the CCBC back in 1979, so that you can listen to the author speak as you view the manuscript. (Thanks to Chris Dowling of the CIMC for making our archival audiotape available via audiostreaming.)
