WINNERS of the 2000 HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN AWARDS: ANTHONY BROWNE and ANA MARIA MACHADO

We'll discuss the books written and/or illustrated by Anthony Browne, British winner of the 2000 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration for the body of his work for children. Do you have access to computer equipment at which you can enjoy the webcast speech Mr. Browne made for the USBBY conference held at the Univ. of Wisconsin in Madison last October? If so, you'll find it at the CCBC web page titled "Views and Visions" http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/webcast.htm#browne. If you attended that conference, you probably remember something of what Anthony Browne had to say. Think about that, and get ready to share your thoughts after hearing him speak in person or hearing him speak via the webcast. If neither of those opportunities is yours, then go to your public library and look at some of Anthony Browne's books. He's both the writer and illustrator of some, and he's also illustrated books written by others.

During the latter part of June, we'll discuss some of author Ana Maria Machado's works. Ms. Machado is a Brazilian writer who is the winner of the 2000 Hans Christian Andersen Award for the body of her writing. Julie Kline (coordinator of the Americas Award for outstanding Latino literature for young people who is based at the Univ. of Wis. - Milwaukee's Center for Latin America) will participate in our dialogue about writer Ana Maria Machado. We hope that those of you with access to an international children's book collection will look at library copies of books by Ms. Machado. Please do this, even if you personally don't read the language(s) into which they're translated.

For information about the Hans Christian Andersen Awards, visit the IBBY web page where you'll also find a listing of past HCA winners, as well: http://www.ibby.org/Seiten/04_andersen.htm

TWO BOOKS by DAVID ALMOND: SKELLIG and KIT'S WILDERNESS

These two novels of interest to middle school readers (and to younger and to older readers, as well) have captured so much attention on both sides of the Atlantic. "Skellig" won major awards in England and in the USA during 1998 and 1999. "Kit's Wilderness" has received rave reviews in the USA this spring, and many readers feel it's even more powerful than "Skellig." What makes each book so compelling? How are young readers responding to each? If you've heard Mr. Almond speak in person, you will be able to tell others some of what he says himself about each of these two novels first published in the USA by Delacorte.

BOOKS by BEVERLY CLEARY

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the book
"Henry Huggins." If some of Beverly Cleary's books have stood the proverbial test of time - as many readers, librarians and booksellers will agree they have - then we want to ask which books? why?

HARRY POTTER # 4

The fourth book in the Harry Potter sequence by J.K. Rowling (to be released for sale by Arthur Levine Books/Scholastic Press on July 8) will be the focus of our discussion. Meanwhile while you wait for this book to be published, you might want to visit the CCBC web page featuring reviews and articles about the first three Harry Potter books http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/hpreview.htm

We look forward to your participation each month!
