I have been deeply moved by the the thought-provoking poems in Adoff's book All the Colors of the Race. These poems are full of hope and messages for all of us of all races--as Adoff says in one poem, "stop looking. start loving." His concluding lines: "All the colors of the race. Human, of course." speak loudly.
Another book of poems by Adoff that I use regularly with my classes is Chocolate Dreams which is filled with yummy images of chocolate in many forms and versions. (Be sure to read the introductory message to the reader.) A favorite poem of mine is Chocolate Dreams. Five. which is a recipe for making chocolate chipless, chocolate chip cookies on a rainy day. Lots of fun here. This book was the inspiration for a sequence of skits during a teacher talent show in our district. Dressed as Hershey's kisses we recited some of these poems while performing some of the actions relating to the poems' messages. More fun with poetry for all ages!
