Returning from Bologna last night and opening up the paper to learn that Jean had died was just awful. I had no idea she was ill, although I understand this form of cancer is quite quick, and was unprepared to have it sink in.

But her executor has already called me, so it's quite real. Jean had written a book on writing picture books that I had organized for her and I had just sent her most recent royalty check a few weeks ago. I thought it odd I hadn't yet gotten her twice yearly letter thanking me.

A lovely, gentle, humble woman that I was very lucky to have known. She will be missed.
