Since the CCBC-Net poetry month discussion from 2 years ago I have been regularly sharing poetry with my students. As an elementary school library media specialist I visit classrooms on a weekly basis to share books with students and teachers. I begin my visit with a poem that all students soon learn and which we continue to recite at the beginning of each following session. I change poems monthly, so by the end of the school year, most students have easily learned 9 different poems. At the end of each session I close with a poem by having a student select one from a basket of poems that I carry. Sometimes we also play poetry 'tag' where students read a poem and then 'tag' another student who also reads a poem.
Now I'd like to share some lines from a favorite poem, "I Love the Look of Words" by Maya Angelou from the book Soul Looks Back in Wonder selected by Tom Feelings.
"When I have stopped reading, ideas from the words stay stuck in my mind, like the sweet smell of butter perfuming my fingers......."
"I love the book and the look of words the weight of ideas the popped into my mind I love the tracks of new thinking in my mind."
