I have so enjoyed and appreciated the comments on poets and poems. I am in the middle of a poetry performance project at a local elementary school where I am the substitute media specialist. When asked to "whip something up" for Parents Admiring the Work of Students (P.A.W.S.) night in April, I immediately offered to organize a student poetry program. After doing my crazy Poetry Breaks in every classroom (Thank you, Caroline Feller Bauer), I asked for volunteeers. The students are pouring in asking for permission to be in "the poetry thing." I am especially pleased and surprised at their choices of poetry--Shel Silverstein, for sure, but they are choosing other poets including Sheila Hamanaka, Eve Merriam, Kalli Dakos, Carl Sandburg, and Arnold Adoff. Several children are presenting their own writing. I am so pleased at their interest, and I hope it rubs off when I invite the parents to share favorite poems or read aloud from poetry collections during
"Open Mike." I have set up the principal as a ringer, just in case!

Thanks again for the suggestions. They will help me get the collection at my NEW SCHOOL (opening Fall 2000) in shape!
