The Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College of Education was founded 75 years ago to guide librarians, educators and parents to the best books for children published each year.
As it is the beginning of the month, I am pleased to announce the winners of
The Josette Frank Award, fiction award given to honor a book of outstanding literary merit in which children or young adults deal in a positive and realistic way with the difficulties of their world and grow emotionally and morally to_ Figuring Out Frances_ by Gina Willner-Pardo, Clarion
The Flora Straus Award, given to a non-fiction book that advances humanitarian ideals and serves as an inspiration to young readers to _Through My Eyes_, by Ruby Bridges, Scholastic
The Claudia Lewis Award given for the best poetry book of the year to _Stop Pretending: what happened when my big sister went crazy _by Sonya Sones
The Best Children's Books of the Year, 2000 edition is now available. This guide produced by The Children's Book Committee is an annual annotated list of 600 recommended books published in 1999 divided by subject and age level.
Also available is a completely revised edition of Books to Read Aloud with Children of All Ages, The Committee has selected 400 titles good for reading aloud, including classics and recent books all available and in print.
