Fwd: Poetry

I have been a lurker on this list for a while, but "Bigmama"'s post on funny poetry has inspired me to post. I love poetry that inspires a chuckle - so do children and so do their parents. Shel Silverstein is a great poet to make kids laugh and also to make them realize that their daily lives are the source for poems. Judy Sierra's Antarctic Antics produced the most enthusiastic response yet from a group of parents in a PTA talk. Also, the principal of the school went out to purchase the book the day after the talk. I used to introduce poetry to fourth and fifth graders with one poem that started "When a giggler gets the giggles". I forget the name of the book, but that poem was responsible for a not too quiet children's area - and some very happy children and teachers. So far my favorite this year is Mammalabilia because of its wit, its use of language and the incorporation of all sorts of poetic forms. I am enjoying the posts of this April - not the cruelest month at all this year.
