IBBY Congress: Sept. 18-22!

Thanks, Ginny. You know, I always have a little reaction to the term "Old World," considering that there were ancient civilizations in the Americas for centuries before Columbus et al. It seems to me that one old world met another old world, creating a new world.

This looks like a marvelous congress, but most of my energies are going into preparations for the big meeting far far away in Milwaukee next fall.

Thanks again, Ellen

The Congress will examine the role played by children's literature in the cultural encounter between the American continent and the Old World. Conference topics include autonomies and integration and multiculturalism; utopia and literature for children; social function, democratization, and access to literature; image and culture; ethics and literature for children; the reader of the twenty-first century; book dialectics and new technologies; and two worlds meeting. Panel discussions and seminar sessions will be held as well.

The 2000 Hans Christian Andersen Awards will be presented during this Congress to Anthony Browne and Ana Maria Machado.

These congresses are incredible opportunities on many levels, well worth planning to attend. The hosts in Colombia have arranged for airport shuttles and many other conveniences for attendees.

Most of the above information was taken from an announcement in the IBBY journal "Bookbird" ...
