With April 18th right around the corner, we can't miss the opportunity to include that famous poem by Henry W. Longfellow--"Paul Revere's Ride." The copy I use is illustrated by Ted Rand, and is enjoyed by children and adults alike. This is a great way to incorporate history and poetry into one lesson.
Speaking of Longfellow, I also read "The Song of Hiawatha," illustrated by Susan Jeffers to my fifth and sixth grade classes.
Other favorites include:
"Heartland," by Diane Siebert and illustrated by Wendell Minor.
"Joyful Noise," by Paul Fleischman
"A Child's Garden of Verses," by Robert Louis Stevenson and
illustrated by Tasha Tudor
I use a wonderful audiotape of "The Raven," read by Edward Blake, with my sixth graders every year, too.
Enjoy!
