Ginny Moore Kruse, who was a member of the 2000 Pura Belpre Award Committee, has asked me to post the following message to CCBC-Net to launch our discussion of the most recent award winners:

Carmen Lomas Garza is the winner of the 2000 ALSC/REFORMA Pura Belpre Award for outstanding illustration by a Latina artist in a book first published in the U.S. A. for children through age fourteen. In her book "Magic Windows / Ventanas Magicas" (Children's Book Press, 1999), Carmen Lomas Garza's pride in her Aztec roots informs the artistry and experience she brings to the creation of "papel picado," or Mexican cut-paper art, reproduced in a slim, bilingual volume.

Her actual "papel picado" art has been installed in galleries across the nation. Readers find out about her work as an artist through the subjects she chooses to interpret in writing and in visual images in this book - from trukeys and cacti to dancing and the Day of the Dead to a stunning visual tribute to her gardening grandfather. Information about "papel picado" - in which the cut images must be literally connected - and examples of this exacting medium is included. The colors of the pages on which the papel picado images are reproduced offer a dramatic contrast to the brief written explanations accompanying the art.

"Making Magic Windows / Ventanas Magicas" is an important link to understanding the visual heritage of many Latinos. So often today the only "papel picado" any child or adult can see are the ones made of plastic, stamped out by machines. The whole idea that this medium once was and still can be a personal, original artistic expression makes this book such a marvelous discovery.

You will also want to know about the companion book, "Making Magic Windows," a step-by-step introduction to this centuries-old medium. Beginning with tips about scissors safety, Ms. Lomas Garza explains how to try making "papel picado."
