This is a message for people who use my book The Pleasures of Children's Literature (Longman) in their college classrooms. The time has come for a new edition of the book, and this time around, I've asked my colleague Mavis Reimer to join me a collaborator and co-author. Our major task will be to integrate a new voice into the book, and we're currently working out how to go about doing that.
But we will, of course, also take the opportunity to consider a range of other changes. If anyone has suggestions for additions, deletions, revisions., etc., we'd be delighted to hear them. We'd especially like to know about things that do and don't work for the students you teach and will happily consider suggestions about how to make the text work better for you.
Also: those who use the book will know that there are sections called "Explorations" which invite readers to engage in activities that will allow them to do some further thinking about the subjects under discussion
. If anyone has developed classroom activities or writing projects around any of the topics of Pleasures that might become new Explorations, we'd be delighted to hear about them--and we'll certainly give credit in the book to anyone whose ideas we include. Since we want to confirm and amplify the book's focus on dialogue and discussion, the sort of new Explorations we're especially hoping for might include or imply an opinion at odds with those expressed at a specific point in the text, offer reasons for the differing opinion, and present an invitation to think further about the issue.
