Celebration of Children's Literature

"We all join in" is the theme for the 11th annual Celebration of Children's Literature

Saturday, April 29, 2000 is the 11th Celebration of Children's Literature at Montgomery College. Parents, teachers, librarians, storytellers, writers and illustrators are invited to attend a day of lively and energizing discourse about literature for children and young and adults and its creators and guides. The conference at Globe Hall, Montgomery College in Germantown, MD will feature writer and storyteller Joseph Bruchac, writer and illustrator Sheila Hamanaka, and Judy O'Malley, editor of Book Links Magazine. Fourteen small group sessions will address topics of interest to both readers and creators of children's books, including: the art of the picture book, working with publishers, finding one's own style in writing or illustration, the art of comic books and graphic novels, how books are evaluated for honors and awards, using books in the classroom and library, and books for babies and toddlers. Presenters include illlustrators Lulu Delacre and Carol Schwartz, writers M.C. Helldorfer, Annette Curtis Klause and Fred Bowen and photographer Bianca Lavies. There will be a gallery of children's book illustration as well as a midday book sale and author signing. For a decade the Celebration has brought aspiring and established writers and illustrators of books for young people together with the librarians, media specialists and teachers (preschool to post-graduate) who work with children and with literature for an in?pth look at issues, critical analysis, the creative process, and the roles of editors, publishers and the market.
The Montgomery College Celebration of Children's Literature began in 1989 and has continued annually as a collaborative effort with four principal partners: the College, Montgomery County Public Libraries, The Children's Book Guild of Washington and Montgomery County Public Schools. Other support and advice in planning comes from the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, independent school librarians in the metro area, Capitol Choices Book Group and from the Maryland Library Association Children's Services Division. Registration is $60 for Maryland residents, $84 for out-of-state, and includes all registration materials, coffee, snacks and lunch. Please phone 301 279Q88 or e-mail sbassey at mc.cc.md.us for a program brochure & registration form. Information about the Celebration may be found at www.childrensbookguild.org and at www.mc.cc.md.us.
