Though it is true that adding a second text takes up space on the picturebook page, it is possible to incorporate this text into the page design in very attractive ways. Note Yumi Heo's elegant use of Korean text in her picture books. Her work inspired me to insist that our Thai folktale, The Girl Who Wore Too Much, be bi-lingual. We ran the Thai text across the bottom of the page in a border, so that it was a part of the illustration and enhanced the page design, rather than "taking up space." And we worked hard with both texts to make them parallel and yet lovely in both languages.
