Another important area of need so evident in the Chicago preschool where I am conducting research is the lack of early childhood literature in Spanish. Much of the literature available tends to be translated works of non-Latino content that present a variety of Spanish quite different from that of the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the US Latino population. Another problem with such translated works is that the reading level in Spanish often seems to be much more difficult than that of the English reading level.

This is one of the reasons I greatly appreciate the poetry books of Francisco X. Alarc?n! Not only is the content touching and authentic, but the language in both English and Spanish is rich--painting word pictures that bring feelings of warmth, laughter and joy. Books such as these are very deserving of awards, and I am pleased that the Pura Belp? award was created so as to ensure that they receive attention and praise.
