Printz Award Discussion continues...

Speaking for Delacorte Press, which published Skellig, we did see an increase in sales after the Printz Award and Honors were announced. But it was not as pronounced as that from the Newbery. Hopefully with publishers touting the award, as you say, and librarians also getting the word out, the Printz will come to be as familiar and trusted a mark of quality as the Newbery. David Almond is also a new writer for young adults, perhaps not so well known yet. He'll be touring the U.S. in March and we hope this exposure will allow people to get to know him better. (BTW, thanks to the committe that formed the Printz rules for allowing the book the chance to be honored, since he is British.) It really is exciting to have this new award to promote the best of YA literature! Karen Wojtyla Random House

As a book reviewer, I get all sorts of publicity materials along with the review copies of books. I smiled when I received Kit's Wilderness, by David Almond, the author of Skellig. In large letters, in the first page of the review packet were the words, By the Printz Award winning writer... (or words to that effect) So the publishers are certainly respecting and promoting the award and the books awarded. I too would like to know if there has been any noticeable impact on sales since the announcement of the award. Robin Smith

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to our Printz Award
Discussion over the past two weeks. Because we're still expecting to
hear from a few people, we've decided to extend the discussion through
Weds Feb 1. But please feel free to make the usual first-of-the-month
announcements tomorrow, too, as our Printz Award discussion continues.

In the meantime, I have a specific question for the publishers of the
Printz Award winner and honor books. Does the award seem to have any
noticeable impact on sales? We always hear that the Newbery and
Caldecott Awards do, and I'm wondering if that will happen with the
        Printz Award, as well.
