after reading "Vendela in Venice," I had a renewed interest in such a trip. The book involves a Swedish girl of elementary school age and her father who spend a vacation week in Venice. You name it - this book is story, geography, history, art, travelogu e. Accompanying Vendela's lively first person narrative one sees full color illustrations of the ride both enjoy in a vaporetto, images of lions, St. Mark's Square, the glass blowers' island of Murano, and finally the famous horses. There are maps, art reproductions, cross-sections of buildings, and images of posters and tickets. Guidebook style advice at the end of the book is hardly necessary because Vendela and her dad offer lots of ideas for an actual or an armchair trip. Has anyone else had a chance to see this book, or better yet - see how kids respond to it - or to any of the other books listed above?
I was privileged to review both Vendela in Venice and The Collector of Moments for Booklist. 'Vendela' was such a treat, not only for its splendid illustrations of what is for me the most beautiful city in the world but for its fresh, childsize take on the city. I have been to Venice four or five times, most often with my husband and my then-teenage son. Vendela's observations reminded me often of Keith's, even though she is younger. It seemed a lovely introduction to give a child who might be taking such a trip, really or vicariously.
The Collector of Moments recalled Venice to me in the beautiful stillness of its images, and their dreamlike quality: water, reflections, architecture in silken colors. While it has obvious appeal to adults, I believe that children will respond to its lightly-worn message of the reality of, and importance of, art.
