To respond, in part, to Marc about the ethnicity of the authors/illustrators for the Pura Belpre Award: I have served for three years now on the Americas Award Committee, another Latino literature book award, which does NOT limit eligibility based on the ethnicity of the author or illustrator.

I wish I could say that we have a lot more to choose from than the Pura Belpre Award Committee does, but, unfortunately, we don't! What's added to the mix by broadening the terms seems to be mostly: 1) Books about the Day of the Dead; 2) Books about the ancient Aztecs and Mayas, with an emphasis on human sacrifice; 3) Formula nonfiction about different Latin American countries.

We did get to consider (and award) the work of Frances Temple ? a rare and exquisite writer by anyone's standards. Sadly, in just a few short years we saw the most promising and prominent voices in Latino literature for young adults dissolve with the untimely deaths of Omar Castaneda, Lyll Becerra de Jenkins, and Frances Temple.
