The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the book THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ, by L. Frank Baum, with a special display of Oz books and related materials. The exhibit, entitled "Happy Birthday, Dear Wizard," will be held at the Henry Madden Library on the campus of California State University, Fresno, from March 1 to April 7. Admission is free.

L. Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books from 1900 to 1919. With this series he created a new kind of fairyland, uniquely American. His work became a major influence on children's literature and on the new genre known as science fiction. After his death, other writers continued the series.

Baum, who lived in San Diego and Hollywood, produced the first Oz movies, silent films that are newly available on video. The exhibit includes information about Oz films over the years, as well as activities sponsored by the International Wizard of Oz Club. The club has approxmiately 3,000 members in 20 countries.

Angelica Carpenter, Curator of the Arne Nixon Center, is a contributing editor to the club's journal, The Baum Bugle, and author of a biography entitled L. FRANK BAUM: ROYAL HISTORIAN OF OZ. She is helping to plan
"OZ 2000," a centennial celebration and conference to be held July 20#, 2000, at Indiana Univeristy in Bloomington. Conference speakers will include Michael Patrick Hearn, author of THE ANNOTATED WIZARD OF OZ, Philip Jose Farmer, Alison Lurie, Brian Attebery, and many other authors and Ozzy experts. For information about the Club or conference, check the Club web site at www.ozclub.org.

The Henry Madden Library is located at 5200 North Barton Avenue, Fresno, California, 93740?14. The exhibit is open during regular library hours. For more information, call 559 278?16.
