Ginny, thanks for the opportunity/invitation to comment on Children's Books from Other Countries, the invaluable bibliography sponsored by USBBY and edited by Carl Tomlinson. I use it all the time when I want to pull together a collection of books from a particular country or see what is available in the U.S. by some author or illustrator whose work I have just come across. I also assign it as required reading in the course on international children's literature that I teach.
And yes, I am working on a second volume to be a companion to Carl's book. This is scheduled for 2002 publication will include books from other countries published in the U.S. since the first volume came out. In addition, it will offer a select list of American books about other countries-- books originating here but set elsewhere, such as *Red Scarf Girl* or *So Far from the Bamboo Grove*. We'll also be expanding the section that offers practices for sharing international literature with children and adding suggestions of thematic groupings that link books across cultures. But perhaps the biggest difference is that the book will be organized geographically rather than by genre. The advisory board discussed this at great length and finally agreed that it provided the easiest access to these books for teachers and librarians.
This is a huge project that relies on the help of volunteer annotators. I have a wonderful group now but welcome more. Anyone who is interested can email me at susan.stan at cmich.edu.
