I just finished reading "Speak". As a middle school teacher, I thought the description of High School was right on target. I have two eigth grade kids reading the book now, both were totally lost in the book during class today. I can't wait to hear their response to it.

3) APRIL, 2000

April is National Poetry Month. To begin thinking about National Poetry Month and books of poetry published for children & young adults, visit the website of the Children's Book Council (http://www.cbcbooks.org). Perhaps you will also want to visit the National Poetry Month website, particularly if you're interested in secondary and college level poetry(http://poets.org).

We'll begin by looking at selected works of some of the poets honored through the formal award process of the National Council of Teachers of English. We'll also see what else you want to discuss later in April, i.e., anthologies you particularly appreciate and why, new poets, etc.

FYI: Poets honored by the NCTE for the body of their published poetry for children are Eve Merriam (1981); John Ciardi (1982); Lilian Moore (1985); Arnold Adoff (1988); Valerie Worth (1991); Barbara Esbensen (1994); and Eloise Greenfield (1997). The NCTE Award began as an annual award but now it's given every three years.

Two years ago, the CCBC-Net community discussed Poetry. Some of you might want to visit the CCBC-Net archives for April, 1998, to look at the comments made during that discussion
(http://ccbc.education.wisc.edu/ccbc-net/apr1998.text).

4) MAY, 2000

Picture Book Writing, including the books written (and illustrated) by Molly Bang. We'll talk about the Charlotte Zolotow Award for outstanding picture book writing and its Winners, Honor Books and Commended Books to date. We'll also see what Ursula Nordstrom, Perry Nodelman and Kathleen Horning have written about Picture Book Writing.
