Joseph Had a Little Overcoat

I apologize for breaking "protocol" to discuss a book that we have already discussed, but I felt that this would be interesting to you all. This weekend I was in Williamsburg, VA at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center. As you may know, this is the oldest institution in the U.S. dedicated to the collection and preservation of American folk art.

A quotation in the museum literature struck me in relationship to "Joseph". You will recall that the Caldecott committee cited "Joseph" for its folk art style of illustration. From the museum: "Bold colors, simplified shapes, imaginative surface patterns, and the artist's highly original and unself-conscious use of various media are characteristics of the best objects created by artisans."

Each of the criteria for accomplished folk art listed above apply to the illustrations in "Joseph". I was very excited when I applied the criteria to the illustrations and found that each one describes Taback's illustrations.

Just something else to ponder!
