Lisa, thanks for mentioning the rare mix of humor and utter seriousness that Laurie Halse Anderson achieves in "Speak." That very quality is something that makes it challenging to book talk ? people look at you like you're nuts if you say anything about how funny it is after you've talked a bit about the serious theme!

I think you really have to read a passage aloud to give people a taste of the main character's voice, since it's her perception of high school life that make it so funny and, come to that, so serious, as well. It's actually quite a complex book that seems simple on the surface, with those very short chapters that are more like vignettes.
