26 FAIRMOUNT AVENUE

I liked 26 Fairmount Avenue too, especially the illustrations, but since I don't usually read early readers, I don't know how it compares to this year specifically or early readers in general. I've had several of my fifth grade students read and enjoy it too. Does anyone know how much of his early life will be covered in this series?

I haven't read the other Honor books, but for the teachers out there: Our Only May Amelia is already available in paperback in the February Scholastic Arrow Book Club. Don't miss it.

I like Bud, Not Buddy as the winner, but don't think it's as good as The Watsons Go To Birmingham-63. On his own, Bud has a parade of characters that come in and out of his life, and I really wanted him to have the stability of a wonderful family like the Watsons. It took me awhile to get over that, and appreciate the book for what it was, rather than resent it for what it wasn't. Regardless, I think the importance of family is underscored in both books, albeit in different ways.

As for afterwords (especially for historical fiction), I really don't care for them at all as a reader. If I had my way there would only be passing references to the inspiration in the author's biography on the flap. As a teacher, though, I do like that kind of information, but would rather find it in interviews, speeches, articles, and biographies.

Jonathan :-)
