Speak

I enjoyed Speak immensely and gave it to my 14-year-old son. He took one look at it and said, "Is this about a girl?" "Yes." "I'm not reading it."
"Give it a chance--Golden Compass was about a girl too, right?" grumble grumble "OK, here's the deal. Read ten pages and if you don't like it I won't nag you to read any more of it." grumble grumble.

Reluctantly picks up book. Finishes it in two sittings. During which he would laugh out loud and say, "Listen to this part--" and then read passages aloud to me. One of his favorites, about social studies--something like,
"We are doing American history for the ninth time in nine years..." is now classic in our household.

No stronger endorsement possible. How grateful I am that this book was written and published. --Linda Sue Park
