Thanks so much for emphasizing this very important point about what the Printz really stands for. Sadly I think it becomes so easy for us to get bogged down by questions about "appeal" and age "appropriateness."

I'm sure the members of the committee can answer this for themselves, but I also discussed it in some detail in an article in the 1/15 issue of Booklist. The Printz is a prize for literary distinction. It is not a prize for popularity, morality, role models, teen appeal etc. As I said in the piece, a book for teenagers may be distinguished even if it takes a distinguished teenager to read it.
