Dean questions the literary quality of "Black Hands, White Sails" in terms of its receiving significant attention for excellence.

When it was discussed at the CCBC last year, readers appreciated the
"missing history" provided by the McKissacks in "Black Hands, White Sails."

Perhaps someone who was a member of the Coretta Scott King Award Committee this year can share one or more reasons for the committee's enthusiasm for this book in terms of its Honor Book status. It's a reasonable question to ask any member of any award committee, and one without any expectation that confidential committee discussion is being sought. Reasons for a committee's consensus can be made public.

Or can someone else also comment about this Coretta Scott King Honor Book?
