This is a "fresh" novel - or maybe "refreshing" is the word I want. It felt new, and clean, and clear, which makes it accessible to young readers. It certainly deals with difficult issues, but it does not seem
"dark" in any way. The voice is authentic and the plot flows quite well. Francie comes alive for the reader immediately. I found it to be a great read which captured me from the first page. One of the reviewers seemed disappointed with the ending, but it seemed perfectly appropriate to me and it was left open enough to allow the reader to dream about what happens next. This was one of my favorite books for 1999 and I was delighted to see it honored. Sue McGown St. John's School Houston, TX
