You're right: Seforim, Sforim...it's all the same word simply being transliterated differently. But Marian's comment below makes the name even more intriguing. Not only is Seforim the Hebrew word for books, but
"Moikher" is the Hebrew word for "seller." The last name of your character therefore being "Bookseller." Mendele Bookseller.
A real person? Maybe....
