Buddy, Not Bud

Golly! Did I hear about my comment that Bud irritated me by constantly reminding people he was "Bud, not Buddy"!!!

I completely agree that names are extremely important to children (and rightly so). I have an acquaintance who often reminds people she is Kathy with a "K", Rogers, no "D" because people are constantly misspellig her name. However, she also waits to see if they will make the mistake first. As a child with the ordinary (short) name Denise, I longed for a name that could be shortened (and I mean in a global sense, not a pet name): Billy or Will for William, Chris for Christine (or Christopher), Micki or Shelly for Michelle--so perhaps I was responding to my inner child.

Overall, it was "mechanics" that bothered me regarding "Bud, Not Buddy." I agree with the comment that Bud's insistence on introducing himself as he did was a connection to his mother and that it was character trait established by Curtis to shape Bud.

Denise, NeNe to my friends and family..... Lincoln, Nebraska dimatulka at alltel.net http://www.geocities.com/dimatulka

P.S Thanks for all the responses to my comment regarding the selection process. It was not my intent to offend and I think some people would be surprised how many people, who are unaware of the guidlines of the Newbery, also wonder about the notion of establishment.
