I recently read to my 1st grade daughter. I had thought she might be too young for it, but she absolutely loved it and was delighted to hear that more books are on the way. For the most part, she understood the book better than I thought she would--for instance, when asked, she could explain in simple terms why the Indians did not trust the white people. One thing that really threw her, however, was the concept of a tribe or clan. This seemed odd to me until I realized that she has no experience of this kind of community, nothing to compare it to in her own life. What a joy to have this book to share with our children, perhaps especially so for those of us who have little knowledge or understanding of Indian history ourselves.
