I am also a fan of Birchbark House (and as a child read the Little House series over and over) so I admit being drawn to books like this, narrative stories that reflect a way of life that I can only experience in books. I think that there is a niche that these books fill that goes far beyond being PC. It is about having stories that don't need gore, violence, precipices and horror, don't need spine tingling action, don't have to have me on the edge of my seat. They are far more about experiencing life through another's eyes, an experience that when it is done as well as in Birchbark House that I treasure and find myself returning to again and again. They are also books that I can recommend to readers with abandon, something I adore! I can tell virtually any family in my community that this is my top pick and everyone should read it, something that is getting more and more rare as books fill with subjects that some families might object to.
I suppose I have said enough, but as you can see I truly adore this treasure of a book. I will read it again, to myself, my family and my community.
