Last Monday, while I was waiting for the ALSC website to make the announcements, I honestly couldn't imagine who was going to win the Newbery. (I can never guess the Caldecott, but that's for another posting.) I had read with great interest the postings from CCBC from December and early January, and had my opinions, but didn't know. When Bud not Buddy was proclaimed, I was excited. No other book, except maybe Speak, held my attention this year the way that Bud Not Buddy did. I'm excited about it. I would agree that it is distinguished, and, from what I read, the best of 1999.
