I have read Sophie many (many, many) times to my three-year-old, and have also used it in story times. It speaks so powerfully to this age group that they are rendered (temporarily) still by it. I was very pleased that it won the Zolotow (Award? Honor? can't remember) as well as the Caldecott Honor, because it seems to me a nearly perfect marriage of images to text. In fact, words and images are one in a number of instances, as when Sophie and her sister argue about possession of Gorilla. Steve's observation of the color and scale shifts as Sophie calms are bang on target (I can testify after my manymany etc. readings). And who can't love that volcanic "red,
red roar"? Vicky Smith Children's Librarian McArthur Public Library (207)284A81 270 Main Street http://www.mcarthur.lib.me.us Biddeford, ME 04005 vjsmith at mcarthur.lib.me.us
