I found Bud, Not Buddy a terrific read. But so far in the discussion there has been no mention of the one thing that really bothered me about the plot: It seemed a bit of a stretch that no one asked Bud his mother's name until close to the end of the book. I realize that this revelation had to be saved for the end for the book to close the way it did, but I noticed the omission in the first scene of Bud with the band. And kept waiting for
*someone* to ask the rest of the way through.
This definitely made the ending feel more 'constructed,' as opposed to
'organic,' for me. However, getting to know Bud and the picaresque nature of the story more than made up for this flaw.
