There was an insightful interview with Christopher Paul Curtis on Canadian CBC radio last Monday (we canucks claim him partially as our own, since he now lives in Windsor, Ontario). In the interview he talked openly about the lack of African American young adult writers and the difficulty he had getting a publisher for "The Watsons go to Birmingham". He even named one large publisher who rejected him, saying there wouldn't be a market for the book. He also said his method of writing was to not worry about "the market" but to just concentrate on voice. Overall, he was quite an interesting interviewee.
